National Anthem of the Republic of Bulgaria

The song "Shumi Maritza" has its origins in the Bulgarian national liberation movement and according to Anchev was first sang by the Bulgarian volunteers in the Serbian-Turkish War (1876), and later by the "opulchenci" in the Russian-Turkish War (1877-78). Under this song the Bulgarian troops have marched in five consecutive wars. The song was the Bulgarian National Anthem until 1947 when the Communist government scrapped it. Today, this song remains virtually unknown amongst the younger generation of Bulgarians.
